Turkish Pazar Festival extended to two days
In 2017, the Commonwealth Bank Turkish Pazar Festival, at Queen Victoria Market, is celebrating its 10th birthday. To celebrate this important birthday, we are holding the Festival over two days. On 11 and 12 March, we will turn the Queen Victoria Market into a traditional Turkish bazaar. Visitors to the Market will be able to taste a delectable array of Turkish savoury foods and sweets, enjoy a cup of Turkish coffee prepared in hot sand, get a fortune told, and watch and listen to the many performances on the main stage and around the Festival grounds.
Queen Victoria Market. All entertainment is free and suitable for people of all ages and abilities.
The Festival, will transform the Market into a traditional Turkish bazaar where visitors will experience the vibrant tastes, colours and sounds of Turkey through food, music, arts and crafts and cultural displays.
A day long traditional Turkish breakfast and numerous food stalls will entice the taste buds. Offerings include gözleme (savoury pancakes), kebabs (how many types are there?), kumpir (baked potatoes Turkish style), and börek (sweet and savoury pastries). Visitors can relax over an authentic Turkish coffee prepared on a hot bed of sand and maybe get their fortune told.
The day long stage program will include overseas performers Aydın Beyoḡlu and Akin Zabit and on Sunday a highlight will be the military precision of the colourful Australian Mehter Band, the first Ottoman style marching band outside Turkey. The Kara Deniz Cultural Association and the Ekol School of Arts drumming group will add colour and energy to Saturday’s program.
Local musicians will include Doḡa, who play an exotic blend of eastern Mediterranean music combined with western classical and modern and pop influences. Grup Mozaiq well known for their diverse repertoire will also appear. Turkey's many styles of traditional and modern music will be performed by the Yunus Emre Culture, Art and Education Centre and the Okyanusya Youth Group and Orchestra.
